Networking: Anywhere, Anytime

I'm always touting the importance of networking and try to practice what I preach. I've been flying across the country presenting worshops and try to strike up a conversation with whomever is sitting next to me on the airplane. Of course, I try to gauge whether or not they're open to talking. If they whip out their book and don't exchange pleasantries, I leave them alone. On a recent trip to Lansing, Michigan, I sat next to a woman whom I discovered was working on a project that would be of interest to subscribers to one of my eNewsletters. I set up a phone interview with her this week.

On another flight, I sat next to a young lady who was going to a job interview in Minneapolis. We did an impromptu mock interview right there on the plane.

Waiting for my baggage at the Minneapolis airport three years ago, I started talking with a woman standing next to me. Turns out she's the HR Manager for a company of lawyers with offices across the country. We have been meeting for lunch once a year since. Will it turn into work for me? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I've met a wonderful person with whom we both feel a connection.

Networking is something that can be done anywhere, at any time. I encourage you to be open and make conversation with someone new every day.
