Consulting Operations Manager at the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Davidson College

The Consulting Operations Manager at the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Davidson College will be responsible for all program administration and daily operations of our Business Consulting programs, including the Gig-Hub program, Amplify Davidson, and other business consulting projects at the Hurt Hub. The goal is to deliver efficient, high-quality service to our students, clients, faculty and staff, focusing on our objective to provide exceptional experiences daily, and adhering to our values of freedom, inclusion, and integrity. This role will evolve as our client base grows.

Through our consulting programs, we provide strategic guidance to businesses looking to grow revenue and customers, while cultivating high-performing teams. Today, we do that by providing consulting services through individual "office hours" up to engagements over several months. Our consulting services embody the core values and mission of the Hurt Hub connecting business owners with Davidson College students, faculty, and staff to drive innovation and growth in an ethical manner in our community.

This role is responsible for representing our consulting offerings on campus and in the community, matching clients to new consulting opportunities, processing required paperwork to onboard student, staff and faculty consultants and getting projects ready to launch, serving as the main contact during projects with clients, and facilitating billing and payments. The Consulting Operations Manager will be responsible for keeping impeccable records of consultants and clients, project management, billing, client satisfaction and net promoter scores, and generating reports as requested. This person will play a key role on the Hurt Hub@Davidson team focused on expanding our successful consulting programs, impacting the lives of hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and entrepreneurs seeking the best support to grow their businesses.

They will have exceptional attention to detail and comfort with data, have experience communicating and working with people from all backgrounds, and be willing to contribute their innovative ideas to help grow our consulting programs. Moreover, they will also have an unwavering focus on inclusion, equity, ethical behavior, and high quality standards.

Responsibilities:

Program Administration:

  • Monitor and track each client's journey through the consulting process: Outreach, Initiation, Planning, Execution, Closure. This will ensure we are making data-informed resource allocation decisions at each stage and as new and repeat client applications emerge.
  • Act as the initial digital contact for new referrals, guiding potential clients towards a scoping call and requesting a written Business Overview & Problem Definition brief. Determine, based on client needs, what the most appropriate consulting team should consist of (e.g. students, faculty, staff, external or internal partners, etc.) and collaborate with the Hurt Hub consulting leadership team to organize an internal kickoff discussion.
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of initial Statements of Work and Client Contracts using Docusign.
  • Manage recruiting and training sessions for new consultants, process HR paperwork, and ensure adherence to Davidson College policies.
  • Manage monthly billing, including the provision of reports on pro bono services where relevant. Identify and implement a system for updating clients on their project progress as needed.
  • As requested by the W. Spencer Mitchem Director of the Hurt Hub or other Hurt Hub leadership team members, prepare summary reports, including detailed data analysis, on the strength and impact of the program.
  • Handle non-profit inquiries in coordination with the Center for Civic Engagement at Davidson College.

Marketing & Client Relationship Management

  • Serve as the first point of contact representing all of our consulting services and programs to our community. This may involve evening and/or weekend hours as needed to represent our services at various events.
  • With an understanding of clients' needs, match the appropriate Hurt Hub team member with the client(s) for discovery sessions and scoping of work.
  • Develop and manage a framework for the consulting team to create case studies post-engagement.
  • Gather client testimonials following the conclusion of each engagement.
  • Partner with the Hurt Hub's marketing team to promote case studies and testimonials, and develop a post-engagement email campaign for re-engaging past clients.
  • Serve as a representative and evangelist for all initiatives at the Hurt Hub@Davidson, across campus, and within our community to drive greater awareness and involvement.

Role Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Prior experience in a consulting practice or similar service business

Role Qualifications:

  • At least 8 years in role(s) that requires professional communication skills, coordinating projects, managing timelines, and engaging multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a positive outlook and focus on successful delivery.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and written communication skills as well as the ability to work well with all members of a diverse college and business community.
  • A deep understanding of and focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to actively seek feedback on existing initiatives and believe in continuous improvement through analysis and measurable outcomes.
  • Willingness to ask for help and understand the limits of your knowledge, with an insatiable curiosity and desire to learn.
  • Proficiency with technology devices and professional software including Google and Microsoft Office suites, Customer Relationship Management platform such as Hubspot, Salesforce, or similar.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness in completing essential duties.
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team setting; ability to effectively receive supervisory direction.

Reports to: W. Spencer Mitchem Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

About our programs:

The Gig-Hub program offers Davidson students the opportunity to engage in paid short-term real-world projects with a diverse range of clients. This project-based work provides clients additional capacity to complete a new or ongoing project while allowing students to expand their skill set. As part of the Gig-Hub program, we also offer the opportunity for clients to engage with first-generation Sophomore students at Davidson for a cohort program called NEXT Level. NEXT Level provides pro bono consulting services to our community while helping students develop professional skills and their network.

Amplify Davidson is a collaborative community initiative, formed through a partnership between the Town of Davidson and the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship which seeks to support the growth of Davidson small businesses and equip residents to thrive as entrepreneurs. The initiative aims to ignite the growth of existing small businesses through a multifaceted approach, encompassing skills-based educational programming, access to business consulting, and a commitment to providing underrepresented business owners with subsidized talent.

Ask Me Anything Hours are held daily and by appointment with the Hurt Hub Leadership staff and through partnerships with local business service providers such as attorneys and CPAs/Financial Advisors. These services are offered pro bono and are held in person or online.

Psychology Practicum 291 is a semester-long class that provides consulting services in the areas of industrial and organizational psychology, working with clients on issues such as team development, culture, organizational structures, onboarding and training, and the like. A team of four Davidson Psychology majors and two faculty members conduct qualitative analysis, and then provide a report of observed themes and strategic recommendations for interventions to accomplish the organization's goals.
