Your Opportunity as the Manager, Engineering & TSO - Coffee Process Engineering

Location:New Orleans, LA - Gentilly

Working Arrangements: 100% on-site

Reports To: Senior Director, SBA Engineering & TSO

In this role you will:

  • Develop and maintain technical and operational expertise for coffee process technologies including drying, roasting, and grinding
  • Initiate, define and deliver operational savings projects to support SBA savings goals
    • Develop relationships with key technical resources in each manufacturing plant
    • Identify loss opportunities across SBA Operations
    • Partner with plants and Marketing Project Managers to complete loss analysis
    • Prioritize opportunities with business and align resources to highest potential projects
  • Deliver optimization and savings projects
    • Partner with Operations, R&D and Green Coffee to identify opportunities
    • Champion increased standardization for greens and roast conditions
    • Lead blend flex efforts to deliver savings or mitigate business continuity risks
    • Coach team members to deliver projects and initiatives
    • Directly lead projects with greatest impact and/or highest complexity
    • Develop and improve work systems and training to qualify new conditions
  • Support delivery of quality improvements and resolution of quality issues through root cause analysis
  • Partner with Operations, R&D, and the broader SBA team to deliver robust initiatives
    • Actively participate in Technical Readiness reviews for initiatives
    • Review and provide input to process and formulation solutions proposed for initiatives, including potential problem analysis for scale-up
  • Coach and develop Process TSO team
    • Set clear team workplan and individual objectives
    • Maintain objectives through regular 1:1 discussions
    • Standardize work processes
    • Develop and deploy measures to track and improve team performance
    • Coach team members to build skills and to increase contributions
    • Complete mid-year and year-end performance reviews
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for process equipment technologies
    • Maintain relationships with key equipment vendors
    • Evaluate equipment improvements for application in our facilities
    • Support plant engineers to develop site capital master plans
    • Develop and recommend opportunities for equipment standardization across plants
  • Work with other managers in JMS process community to align on similar approaches to business practices

What we are looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Food Science
  • 4+ years of engineering (or related food industry) experience
  • 3+ years of experience in Operations, R&D, and/or Engineering/TSO

  • Problem solving: demonstrated ability to define a problem statement, identify root cause, and develop/implement systemic corrective actions
  • Leadership: demonstrated ability to direct the efforts of a team including engaging team members and enabling the team's success; ability to influence without authority
  • Initiative: demonstrated ability to lead work effectively and independently given basic coaching and guidance
  • Collaboration: must work effectively with individuals and teams across the organization
  • Communication: demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing
  • Travel is required by the role and is typically under 20% (peak periods may be higher)

Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering
  • 10+ years of engineering (or related food industry) experience
  • Capital project and/or start up management experience
  • Previous experience managing small teams and coaching individuals
  • Fundamental understanding of food science / ingredient chemistry
  • Experience developing and executing CQV plans and qualifying ingredients / recipes / processes
  • Familiarity with Prodika and TraceGains
